Axminster Town AFC v Elmore AFC
By Steven Rice
Eagles scrappy win takes them top of the tree.
Another win on the road, but a very below par performance from the standards we expect from the squad.
Axminster made it a tough game for us, working very hard when we had the ball, closing us down with pace as we normally do to teams.
Superb facilities at Tiger Way, but the grass was a bit long and not really ideal for our fast paced style of football.
The game started with our hosts putting us under pressure early on, and we didn’t help ourselves with a below par performance, especially with our ball retention and quality of our passing and movement.
However on 31 minutes, an Isaac Furness
free kick swung in from the left side, found Daniel Tapp
to rise above everyone to turn the ball home with a deft flick into the corner. 1-0.
On 38 minutes Kieran Rapo
found some space wide left and put a lovely diagonal ball for Jordan Bastin
, he outpaced their fullback and slotted home a superb finish into the far corner of the net. 2-0.
The 1st half finished without anymore goals being added, even though both sides pushed for the next goal.
Half time, and we managed to come in without conceding, and fortunately took some of our chances we created.
The 2nd half started in a similar fast paced fashion, but it was Axminster who drew first blood after half time.
On 55 minutes we gave away a silly free kick outside our box. With everyone set they rolled the ball past our wall, and without any movement from us defensively, they had free runs into the box unchallenged and simply turned the ball into the corner of the net while we seemed rooted to the spot.
Now 2-1 and Axminster had their tales up sniffing an opportunity for a comeback.
Fortunately we raised our game a little, and on 69 minutes a fine Bastin run down the left wing and a quality cross into their box found Kieran Rapo
who turned the ball home taking us back into a 2 goal lead. Now 3-1 up, but that didn’t stop the hard work ethic that our hosts had shown all game.
The game came to a close without anymore goals added. Another 3 points, but possibly our poorest showing of football for a 90 minute period we’ve had so far this season.
Next Saturday we trave to Sidmouth Town, fresh from their FA Vase victory at the weekend, so yet another tough game in prospect.
