Elmore Fc v Buckland Athletic Re FC
Throgmorton Devon Premier Cup.
The Throgmorton Devon Premier Cup came to Horsdon Park this weekend, and we welcomed Buckland Athletic res as our next opponents.
A tough game on paper, and a tough game on the pitch, with our visitors fielding a mix of youth and experienced players.
The first half was a mixed affair, both sides trying their best to find an opening goal to settle the nerves. We made some good chances, but could find the finish to top off the hard work. As far as the team performance in the 1st half, we were wayward and wasteful at times with our passing, giving the ball away far too easy in the wrong areas, and trying to force passes where there was perhaps more benefit on retaining possession.
That said, we did create chances on the positive side, we did have more ball possession and the only real problems they gave us were ones we created ourselves.
A lot of toing and froing from both sides, but neither could break the deadlock at half time, so the game ended all square at the break.
The 2nd half saw us take more control of the game, and with a change of shape saw more pressure increasing on our visitors defence. Jake Wannell
especially giving us some width to our game that had been lacking in the first half, helping to create the added dimension to our game.
As the game continued, Buckland looked as though our higher tempo was taking its toll, and it wasn’t long before we were awarded a penalty for a shirt pull inside the box after a sharp turn from Callum Old
Dave O’Connor step up to take it, but unfortunately pushed it wide, and in doing so injured himself by dislocating his hip and had to be stretchered off to wait for an ambulance, and an overnight stay in hospital...
The brief disappointment of that miss didn’t last long, and on 62 minutes, after a sustained period of pressure on the Buckland box saw several attempts at goal blocked, only for the ball to roll to a waiting Jake Wannell
who ran onto the ball to fire it home giving the visiting keeper no chance, 1-0 and with a more dominant display in the 2nd half, fully deserved.
The rest of half continued in similar manor, with Buckland making only the odd forage into our half without really troubling John Wannell
Unfortunately we couldn’t add to our tally with the chances we continued to create, but as the final whistle came, a fully deserved win and with a far better 2nd half display we move on to the next round. Hopefully another home draw.....
Many thanks to the faithful fans that turned up to watch again. We now have a free Saturday next week, and our next game is Wednesday 18th with a 7:30 ko against Okehampton Argyle FC.
Should be a cracker so book it into the diary....
