Elmore were too strong for Hatherleigh Town FC.
Elmore were too strong for Hatherleigh Town FC today, even though our visitors put up a stubborn and resistant show to slow our progress early in the game.
We had a scratchy start again, not getting out of the blocks as quick as we would like, but our opponents worked hard to counter anything we tried to build. We created a few chances as the half went on, unfortunately we couldn't turn anything into goals as our cutting edge seemed a little lacking early on. And with our visitors not causing us too many problems, its seemed more a case of when we would score and not if.
And on 40minutes a free kick conceded outside the right edge of the box, was taken by Tom Tricker, and curled into a crowded box where the first effort going goal bound was blocked, only for an alert Matt Harvey to rise above his marking to head home and open our account. 1-0 Just before half time and a good time to open our account from a slightly scrappy first half..
Half time tactics were talked, and players took back to the pitch with more instruction for the 2nd half. Hopefully this would see us kick on with a better tempo than the 1st half.
And we didn't disappoint, and with only 5 minutes gone into the 2nd half, Jake Wannell
found himself in space to cross an inch perfect ball from the captain, who found Jesse Howe
, who had just entered the game for an injured Jordan Ford
, and pulled off the back of a defender to head home into the far corner and increase our lead to 2-0 on 50 minutes.
We were now settling into a better rhythm and tempo as the game seemed safe, and more possession lead to more chances created, and with 70 minutes on the board Jake Wannell
once again found himself in space drive a low hard cross into the box, only for a Hatherleigh defender to slide in and tuck the ball home in front of advancing attackers. 3-0 and now very comfortable in the game.
With young Lucas White stepping in to help out with numbers today, entered the pitch and was straight into the action, with some accomplished touches and passes, Lucas found himself slotting a lovely ball to Tom Tricker outside our opponents area, Tom turned and strucked a hard shot low into the corner of the net leaving the keeper with no chance of saving, and making it 4-0.
And with the minutes ticking away, Jon Dawe
from central midfield placed a beautifully weighted pass over the defenders, to find a running Jordan Bastin
beyond their right back, who controlled wonderfully on the run dropping the ball in his path, and without breaking stride fired home a rocket into the far corner, again leaving the visiting keeper with no chance of saving, and a 5-0 scoreline.
Hatherleigh did have a player sent off for 2 yellow cards near the end of the match as their energy levels dropped, and the foul count raised, but to their credit they never gave up and work hard to the final whistle.
Into the next round, and a decent display again with room for improvement still. Hopefully with stronger opponents will come better performances, and more consistency within the 90 minutes.
Next week we return to league action against Clyst Valley. Another game at home to no doubt another hard working team looking to be the first side to caused an upset by taking points away from their visit to Horsdon Park.
Many thanks to the faithful fans who have turned up again today, in what were at times some horribly wet conditions.
Hopefully we will see more of you all through the season, and numbers can grow on the sidelines as we try to entertain each week with our style of football. #eagles
