Feisty Affair at Horsdon Park..
We welcomed our next opponents Newton Abbot Spurs FC to Horsdon Park on the back of some decent results in our previous three friendlies. But with a scratch team available, we knew this would probably turn out to be our toughest test yet.
And on that front it didn't disappoint. Our opponents were quick off the mark, putting pressure on us every time we tried to play, and this led to some early mistakes that put us under some pressure. We also had our moments in a first half that ebbed and flowed from end to end, with some good football displayed by both teams.
But, it was the visitors who opened the scoring with a runner finding space at a corner, and unchallenged turned the ball goalbound to make it 0-1.
The game continued at a frenetic pace, and with some physical challenges being put about by the visitors, giving them a sledge edge through the first half to half time.
A change of formation, and some words of encouragement seemed to give us a new desire from the start of the half. As we grew into the game we started to seize a bit more control, and we started to close the opposition better, denying them so much space as they had found in the first half, and with better ball retention and movement on and off the ball it wasn't long before we started to create openings.
The got a bit more heated as we took more control, and Spurs also upped their level of ferocity in some challenges which incurred the roth of the referee on several occasions, and probably in a league match may have had a slightly stiffer sentence to them.
We did draw level through Jordan Bastin with a fine strike, and continued to create more chances, but just lacked the cutting edge to take us into the lead and possibly to the win. But with only seconds to go, a scuffed free kick saw the picked up and swiftly passed forward for a Spurs player to turn and unleash a rocket into the top corner right on full time, with only just enough time to kick off, that ended a frantic and physical game.
A great test for us to see how far the squad has come, and we look forward to the weekend, and another home game this time against Brixham AFC who also play in the Peninsula East Division. Should be another good test before our league starts the following week.
3pm kick off on Saturday at Horsdon Park, so please come along and help lift your local team towards another victory and close our pre season on a positive note.???
